okay, so i'm mostly posting this here as a sort of 'universe bible' so i don't forget but, whatever:
Chapter 1: A new beginning.
The empire of the black star has endured for thousands of years, surviving rebellion, incursions from various alien powers. Though a shadow of it's former self for the past 3000 years, it endures as a testament to terran determination. It's beginnings from a disillusioned army officer 'awakening' to the corruption that had become of the sol system since the 23rd century, back then interstellar travel and communications were the realm of theory and fiction... the military was mearly just another gang used by the rich and powerful to keep order, often with brutal results.
Through the decadence rose a young Col. Tiberius... dedicated as he was to justice he often questioned his orders, a natural leader in his own right, his men started following his example... his unit was often sent on suicide missions, yet returned in victory... as his career went on the missions grew more suicidal in nature... were it not for a chance encounter with 'A strange grey-skinned woman' as his memoirs describes it, he would have simply done his duty as many have before him.
No one knows what happened between the two, not even Tiberius himself knew something just... 'clicked' for him as if he had seen the world in a new light. Whatever it was, filled him with the will to change things for the better...

chapter 2: Uprising
When Tiberius began his revolt in Rome... what normally would have been an easily crushed mutiny seemingly triggered a mass uprising within the military... units began to mutiny around the sol system, utterly in spite of the lack of coordination and build-up between them. Theories to this day persist as to the reason they did... unfortunately, the truth may be lost to time itself.
Within the chaos that followed, several ruling families either vanished or were outright destroyed. Many intellectuals of the time assumed the various rebel factions would turn on each other and start a long, bloody conflict that would claim many lives, innocent and guilty alike.
While they were right to assume a break-up... the expected wars never happened, if anything many areas were simply run similarly to the previous regime, others move in different directions. Tiberius' memoirs mention he had another 'moment of clarity' as he called them and set things in motion that, though he wouldn't live to see his vision fulfilled... marked the beginnings of the empire.

Chapter 3: Contact
while the various states that had risen from the ashes of the previous regime were ready to launch world war 4 (world war 3 being what resulted in the previous regime.) at any moment... it certainly would have started, were it not for the chance arrival of the first recorded contact with the Malkai who, in no uncertain terms demanded humanity surrender control of the system, claiming an ancient promise made to them by their gods.
Many states surrendered control of their territory over to the aliens, if only to avoid further conflict... while the others followed suit, they did so after arranging a few side-projects, free of any oversight... many of those leaders later commited suicide to protect their projects.
The Malkai had won for the moment and freely abused their new power, often destroying important cultural and historical monuments that offended them. As far as they were concerned, sol would become an important cultural, political and economic center, they cared not of humanity. As far as they were concerned, the system would become the crown jewel of their empire regardless of what they did.
While the Malkai would dominate the system for 50 years... something... forgotten stirred within the Alpha Centauri system.

chapter 4: Colony
During what is now called the era of corruption, many people simply vanished off of earth... most of them were simply killed, others worked to death on elaborate yet ultimately pointless projects... some, however were loaded onto large generation ships and exiled from the system, in hope that the many dangers of the void would kill them.
Though they all went in different directions... somehow within two generations time, they all ended up within the same system... approximately five years after it's previous occupants seemed to have simply vanished under unknown circumstances. Many ideas would come and go, none of the logical ones fit, nor would there ever be a satisfying theory to explain the extremely contrived coincidences upon their arrival.
Reports of security officers mention 'possible paranormal activity' and 'Grey-skinned humanoids' in the initial security sweep of each metropolis... others were found to have gone insane, babbling about 'monsters from the beyond', 'dark gods' and saying all sorts of gibberish among many other unsolved mysteries that cropped up in their first months.

chapter 5: All-Out war
It is unclear how the wayward colony learned of the situation within the sol system, or even how they figured out the secrets of faster than light travel... historians suggest the data was just lying around for them to build a working distortion drive. In the long run it didn't matter... when they arrived in the system, they effectively started the first interstellar war... the Malkai were caught off guard and after months of fighting, broke ranks and fled to their territory after commiting one final attrocity.
The destruction of the colony on Luna served only to seal their fate later on. Industry was mobilized, new volcanic forges were built to bolster an allready impressive manufacturing complex... the colonists assisted in ship building and design. A then young Constantine, the grandson of Tiberius, took command of the new fleet and began a campaign that would see the end of the Malkai... and the birth of a new, terran empire.
