What are your thoughts on this subject? Can machines be programmed to think for themselves and have freewill?

I agree. It's ok to have robots that think and stuff, but free will is completely out of the question. If we don't control them, we're inferior and they'll figure it out. Once they figure it out, it would be pretty easy for them to wipe us all out. And that would be bad...

But thinking is free will, sort of. That is, if it's not programmed thinking. I would gladly die in the hands of a robot who did it for a logical reason rather than by a human being who does it because of ego/jealousy/any other human emotions.

I think scientists are going to far with robots. If we don't stop soon all your going to have to do is sit on your couch all day. Robot's will do everything for you, all you'd have to do is press a button and the thing will feed you.

Thats Dangerous. Don't they watch the movies? They are the movies. It's just that if the machine could gain a conscience then what would they do? What would they think? What constitutes life, anyway? How do we know the sun, for instance, is not aware that it exists? Sure we could do all sorts of experiments and apply all our theories, but the truth is that life itself is illogical but yet it exists...

that reminds me of that socklops cartoon. It was by the same guy who made salad fingers, there was this one part where this scientist zapped a cigarette lighter with a special beam, giving it self awareness...

Yeah, a week or two ago I was watching something on the History channel. It was called the Last days on Earth, which talked about the 7 ways our world or race can/will get whiped out. One of them was from computers(No, not dell or mac) and it talked about how they might turn against us eventually if we keep desgining and upgrading them. It was a pretty interesting progam...

The guy who animates that stuff bases it on dreams he's had. How do you think he feels?
